Pètris

Malvasia

DOC Collio

  • bicchieri petris malvasia

    The wine

“Paired with the taste of the sea in a savory and crispy fish fry, the sweet and fruity palate of Malvasia "Petris" becomes the "poetry of the land," as the great Mario Soldati would have said.”
  • malvasia petris venica

    The history

This name also echoes the Friulian word "piere," which means "stone": the area is characterized by a particularly rocky subsoil, from which some stones were taken that are still present today in the walls of the Venica farmhouse.

Harvest

Grapes were harvested on September 12th 2022.

Vinification | Aging

After harvesting, the grapes are macerated for about 20 hours at a temperature of 10/12°C in dedicated containers, protected from oxygen with innovative systems that recycle fermentation carbon dioxide, in order to minimize the use of antioxidants. Approximately 60% of the wine matures in large wooden barrels of 20/27 hectoliters, while the remaining portion is aged in stainless steel containers.

Bottling

The wine was bottled during the full moons between March and June 2023.

The Wine

“Paired with the taste of the sea in a savory and crispy fish fry, the sweet and fruity palate of Malvasia "Petris" becomes the "poetry of the land," as the great Mario Soldati would have said.”

This is the pleasant commentary by journalist Carlo Cambi, a dear family friend, regarding our Malvasia "Petris," named after the area where the vineyards are located.

This name also echoes the Friulian word "piere," which means "stone": the area is characterized by a particularly rocky subsoil, from which some stones were taken that are still present today in the walls of the Venica farmhouse.

The vineyard and the vine

The History

The origins of Istrian Malvasia in Friuli-Venezia Giulia date back to the times of the Venetian Republic, specifically to the 13th century. It is believed that the Malvasia vine was characteristic of the Hellenic peninsula, particularly of a city in the Peloponnese that still exists today, then called Monembasia or Monovaxia, which literally means "port with a single entrance."

The vineyard

This name later evolved into Malfasia and was Italianized as Malvasia. In the territories of present-day northeastern Italy, which were part of the Serenissima at that time, the quantity of wine produced was not enough to satisfy the population's consumption, mainly because the present varieties were not particularly productive. The Venetians would have penetrated the Peloponnesian region and transported the Malvasia vine, which was quite profitable in terms of quality, through Dalmatia to Istria and Friuli.
