It is the first of a series of three wines that will be presented in the next months of 2020, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the company. The bottle’s label mentions an extract from the purchasing contract signed in 1930 by the founder Daniele Venica to buy the property.
Schioppettino is a black grape variety typical from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, cultivated for centuries exclusively in the Judrio River Valley in Prepotto and historically known with the name “Pokalza”, which in Slovenian means Ribolla Nera.
The origin of today’s name is uncertain, but it seems to be linked to the Friulian word “Scopp”. This term can refer to two different characteristics of this variety: the craeky noise of the ripe grape when chewed under the teeth, due to its thick and crunchy skin. Or its high acidity which causes inside the bottle a second fermentation, called malolactic, creating in the past some carbon dioxide bubbles and the consequential leakage of the cork.
It is the most famous Friulian black grape variety together with Refosco dal peduncolo rosso. Almost disappeared from the territory in favor of more productive kinds of vine, it was recovered in the 70s and gradually spread around till it became one of the most successful indigenous Friulian qualities.
Our Schioppettino vineyards are located a few kilometers from the estate, within the DOC Friuli Colli Orientali.

The grapes were picked at the end of September with a slight over-ripening, given the climatic trend of 2012 vintage.
In the cellar, the grapes were then selected, de-stemmed, and macerated for 10 days.
Afterwards the wine has been aged in French barriques for 12 months (moderate use of new wood).
Eventually, to finalize its maturation, our Schioppettino was bottled for another 5 years. This slow sedimentation process at constant temperature allowed the grapes to express their characteristics at their best, refining hints and aromas in a clear and harmonious way.
The wine was bottled in mid-March 2014 and then aged for 5 years, entering the market in June 2019.
More or less intense ruby red, with evident violet notes that tend to decrease with aging.
The aromas of this wine range from berry fruit (wild blackberry, raspberry, blueberry) to sour cherries, spicy notes of black pepper, mint, cocoa, licorice, tobacco and vanilla, with different intensities according to aging.
On the palate it’s dry, soft and round, with a great full body. There is fresh-savory vibration that supports well-integrated, velvety and pleasant tannins. The flavours consistently recall the aromas, from small red and black fruit to spicy notes, with a persistent finish enriched with herbaceous and green pepper nuances.
Excellent with skewered red meat, medium-aged cheeses and wild game meat. Try it with a chamois stew with currant sauce.
