Land and climate
|
The Friuli region is a region well-known for its white wines and characteristic red wines. The hillside tiers of Collio extend from Gorizia to the Dolegna district of Collio. The territory expands along the east-west route, with wide slopes of hills well-exposed and particularly adaptable for wine-production of great prestige. The soil and the climate are the two primary factors which determine the recognizability of our wines. The slopes of the hills are formed by stratified marl and sandstone of oceanic origin, known as "Ponka", brought to the surface in a remote era with the rising of the Adriatic depths as is demonstrated by the discoveries of marine fossils. The rocky formation dissolves under atmospheric influences, thus forming coarse elements which evolve in a granular and fine soil that with the passing of the seasons are transformed into a substratum ideal for wine-producing. The Julian Pre-Alps provide an efficient protection from the cold winds from the north, and the proximity of the Adriatic coast some 20 km away, contributes the moderate microclimate and creates the unique phenomenon of the reflection of the sun's rays, a great benefitting for vine-growing on the east and west slopes. |
